Hiking and walking on Dartmoor

We bet you’re itching for a lovely long walk or hike.

Imagine hiking or walking straight from your cottage onto Dartmoor. You can do that from The Cottages at Blackadon Farm.

Where do you want to go?

A short walk leads you to Ugborough Beacon where you’ll have far reaching views across Dartmoor and the South Hams. It’s stunning.

Keep walking and you’ll reach Spurell’s Cross. This was used by monks in medieval times to help them navigate between Buckfast Abbey and Plympton Priory. Parts of the cross were shot off by soldiers during target practice in the 1800’s, but have been partially restored since. There are also remains of a military shooting range which was used nearly 200 years ago.

You can trek along the Puffing Billy track. This was used by a train to carry granite that had been excavated from Dartmoor. The granite has been used in the construction of famous buildings and bridges around the world.

Another local walk will bring you to an ancient burial chamber where remains have been dated back 3,000 years. It’s pretty close to an ancient settlement too.

Longer walks will take you to the Avon Dam reservoir which is a great location for a picnic, or to Long Timber Woods – the name describes the location perfectly.

If history isn’t your thing, the walks will provide stunning views and access to plenty of nature. Of course, you’ll get to encounter Dartmoor Ponies. Usually white ones near us. Sheep are everywhere and it’s lovely hearing lambs bleating in spring. Buzzards and skylarks fly overhead. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear the Dartmoor Cuckoo during summer.

If you’re into letter boxing, there are plenty to find on Dartmoor. We even host letter boxing groups from as far away as America.

The Cottages at Blackadon Farm provide you with a perfect base for walking and hiking whether you’re a large group, friends or couple. We can arrange hearty breakfasts before your day out, or picnics for you to take on your walk through Dartmoor Larder. We have a heated drying room for wet clothes if the weather turns. When you’ve finished your walk, rest your legs by taking a seat in the south facing courtyard or guest lawn. We can provide guided walks locally or introduce you to other guides if you wish to go further afield.

You’ll easily be able to fill a holiday with hikes and walks from here.
