Just a few steps away from the National Marine Aquarium are the Mayflower steps where the Pilgrim Fathers left from. Close by are regular boat trips which sail around the harbour and give you close up views of nuclear submarines and warships at Europe’s largest naval base.
After a boat ride, meander through the neighbouring cobbled streets to find old fashions sweet shops, pubs with plenty of character and two of the UK’s top 20 fish and chip shops. On a sunny day you can watch the world go by and take in the sea air whilst relaxing on a bench overlooking the ocean.
An alternative trip on the water is the short hop on the Cremyll Ferry to Mount Edgcombe. This historic country park includes woodland walks, a beach, country house, formal gardens, craft shops and rare Black Bee hives.
On a sunny day, take your swimmers and make a day of it at Tinside Lido. This art deco pool is truly unique given it’s so close to the city and overlooks the harbour.
